"My goal is simple. It is a complete understanding of the
universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all."

There is more to this statement by Stephen Hawking than
is apparent in the words. For within it is the very
essence, the spirit and wisdom of Stephen Hawking.

Although the Stephen Hawking became well known for his book,
A Brief History of Time, the bulk of his career has been
spent in pursuit of the ultimate question: How does the
universe work and where did it come from?
A unified "theory of everything" may be in sight and could be
reached before the end of this century. Such a theory holds
the prospect of combining General Relativity and cosmology in
one grand theory of creation. Such a theory would be able to
predict the probability of any event at all, at least in
principle, although in practice the calculations would be too
complex to make the equations solvable by theoretical
physicists in all but the simplest cases.
The N=8 supergravity theory is the prime candidate for a
unified theory.
